SIIG, Inc. Announces New FireWire 800 CardBus Solution!
(Fremont, California; January 21, 2004) SIIG, the market leader in I/O connectivity products (including 1394 FireWire, USB, serial/parallel ports, etc.) is proud to announce the latest addition to the family of FireWire 800 (also known as 1394b) products, the FireWire 800 CardBus DV Kit.SIIG’s FireWire 800 CardBus DV Kit (SIIG part # NN-PC8312, MSRP $99.99) is a complete DV editing solution that includes a 3-port CardBus (Type II) adapter that includes two 1394b (9-pin) and one 1394a (6-pin) ports, DV editing software (Ulead VideoStudio DVD SE), and a 6-pin to 4-pin DV cable. By offering both FireWire 800 & 400 ports, users can still connect current FireWire 400 devices (such as DV camcorders, external hard drives, scanners, and more) & be prepared for upcoming devices that offer the increased speed and productivity that FireWire 800 offers.
Improved Performance & Capacity
FireWire 800 is the next generation of 1394 FireWire technology, replacing the current 1394a standard. This next generation offers data transfer speeds of up to 800 Mbps (twice the speed of 1394a) and is backward compatible. FireWire 800 offers a number of improvements, including:
- • More efficient – new arbitration control termed BOSS (Bus Owner Supervisor/Selector) transmits data packets more efficiently, using less network bandwidth. New advanced data encoding based on codes used by Gigabit Ethernet & Fiber Channel (called 8B10B) produces less signal distortion.
- • Improved cabling – unshielded twisted pair CAT-5, Plastic Optical Fiber (POF), hard polymer clad fiber (HPCF, & shielded twisted pair STP).
- • Increased cable length (up to 100 meters vs. 4.5 meters with 1394a)
- • Future scalability (future generations already planned at 1.6 Gb/sec & 3.2 Gb/sec)
In addition to the new FireWire 800 CardBus DV Kit, SIIG’s line of FireWire 800 (1394b) product offering includes three PCI-based adapter cards & various cables. The FireWire 800 DV Kit (SIIG part # NN-831012, MSRP $89.99) is a 32-bit PCI adapter that includes 2 external 1394b (9-pin) and 1 external 1394a (6-pin) ports, DV editing software (Ulead VideoStudio DVD SE), and a 6-pin to 4-pin DV cable. The FireWire 800 PCI-32T (SIIG part # NN-830112, MSRP $69.99) is a full-profile 32-bit PCI adapter that includes 2 external 1394b (9-pin) and 1 external 1394a (6-pin) ports, which allows users to easily connect current 1394a devices and upgrade to the latest in FireWire in one card. Lastly, the FireWire 800 M-64(SIIG part # NN-83M012, MSRP $89.99) is a cross-platform 64-bit PCI adapter designed for both PC and Mac systems and includes 3 external 1394b ports (9-pin), a 9-pin to 9-pin 1394b cable, and a 1394b 9-pin to 6-pin adapter (to use with 1394a devices).
Future FireWire 800 Products
As with all of SIIG’s product families, plans are to extend the FireWire 800 product family to include many different configurations and solutions for computer users. Upcoming products will include various combination adapters (offering FireWire 800 along with other high-speed connectivity technologies in one adapter), drives enclosures, and much more.
