SIIG’s FireWire 800+USB 2.0 Combo PCI (SIIG part # NN-8US212, MSRP $89.99) upgrades computers to the latest in high-speed connectivity with FireWire 800 (or 1394b) & Hi-Speed USB 2.0 in one card, saving valuable expansion slots. This unique upgrade solution is compatible with both PC’s (Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003) & Mac (Mac OS 8.6 or later, OS X (v10.1.3) or later for USB 2.0 and Mac OS X (v10.2.4) or later for FireWire 800) computers. Adding 3 FireWire (2 FireWire 800/1 FireWire 400) & 5 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 ports, the FireWire 800+USB 2.0 Combo PCI works with all FireWire (800 & 400) and USB (2.0 & 1.1) devices including DV camcorders, digital cameras, hard drives, printers, scanners, and more.
FireWire 800
FireWire 800 is the next generation of 1394 FireWire technology, replacing the current 1394a standard. This next generation offers data transfer speeds of up to 800 Mbps (twice the speed of 1394a) and is backward compatible. FireWire 800 offers a number of improvements, including:
- • More efficient – new arbitration control termed BOSS (Bus Owner Supervisor/Selector) transmits data packets more efficiently, using less network bandwidth. New advanced data encoding based on codes used by Gigabit Ethernet & Fiber Channel (called 8B10B) produces less signal distortion.
- • Improved cabling – unshielded twisted pair CAT-5, Plastic Optical Fiber (POF), hard polymer clad fiber (HPCF, & shielded twisted pair STP).
- • Increased cable length (up to 100 meters vs. 4.5 meters with 1394a)
- • Future scalability (future generations already planned at 1.6 Gb/sec & 3.2 Gb/sec)
Hi-Speed USB 2.0
USB 2.0 offers transfer rates 40 times faster than the older USB 1.x, running at up to 480 Mbps compared to the USB 1.x’s 12 Mbps. All Hi-Speed USB 2.0 products are fully backward compatible with existing USB 1.x devices and offers the same user friendly features as USB 1.x, such as being hot-pluggable (connect/disconnect devices without restarting system), and the ability to connect up to 127 devices.
USB 2.0’s high-speed transfer rates lends itself perfectly to the growing demand of high-speed/increased bandwidth products available today, such as digital video and still cameras, drives, scanners, audio devices, etc.
